Alcyonacea, or soft corals, are an order of corals that do not produce calcium carbonate skeletons. Class Hydrozoa, the hydroids and hydromedusae, display alternation of generations with asexual benthic polyps alternating with sexual planktonic medusae. Class Anthozoa, sea anemones, corals, sea pens; have no Medusoid stage. They are further subdivided into two subclasses.
In Sinularia sp., a tetraprenylated spermine derivative has been isolated—sinulamide— which revealed an H,K-ATPase inhibitory activity. H,K-ATPase is a gastric proton pump of stomach and is the enzyme primarily responsible for the acidification of the stomach contents.Sinularia is a very widespread, common and diverse genus of soft coral however it does not have the dimorphic polyps like Sarcophyton or Lobophytum. Sinularia has small polyps on the surface of its branches and can actually create a solid base around the bottom of the coral.
